THE WAY

Do not rush through your life like it’s a series of hurdles with the most frenetic person winning. Pause to evaluate your activities for meaning before writing them into your schedule.

DAILY PRACTICES

Consider a new take on your daily planner by listing the things you are missing out on due to being overbooked, overscheduled, and overstimulated. If some recurrent theme is taking place, like blowing off Spanish lessons or constantly rescheduling the massage, reset your equilibrium to achieve balance by recognizing what those imbalances delay.

Choose that something no longer fulfills you or has lost any meaning. If you have events scheduled that you “should” or “have to” attend, drop one of these from your calendar this week and see what space – and even relief – that provides.

It used to be that we had to find time to motivate ourselves off the couch; now we don’t have time to listen to ourselves think. Create a practice of stillness every day to simply meditate on the events of the day. Sitting in stillness helps quiet the mind to create focus and clarity.

Follow the simple rule of finding time for friends, family, and meaningful activities. If most of your time is spent with people who drain your energy, activities that no longer interest you, or commitments born out of obligation only, you may be missing out on more fulfilling experiences. Start with what gives you pleasure first, and build your life around those – the people and activities that enrich you.

Are you addicted to constantly reporting to others what you are doing, when you are doing it, and why? If you spend more time updating your Facebook status page than actually living your life, it is time to be present in your day, not reporting about it.

Turn reporting into accountability, and put technology to work for you. Use social networking facilities like Facebook and Twitter to help propel you forward with a challenge you are working on, such as looking for a service worker, a job, or help with a consumer choice.
